Under the patronage of the Honorable Minister of Finance, Ms. Taif Sami Muhammad, and under the supervision of Ms. Israa Saleh Dawoud, President of the Insurance Bureau, the technical workshop on insurance against climate risks was held on Thursday morning, April 25, 2024, in the Bureau’s conference hall, in cooperation with the United Nations World Food Program. This workshop was attended by Mr. Ali Redha Qureshi / World Food Programme, Mr. Firas Ali Muhammad / Office of His Excellency the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Najah Abbas Ali, Director General of the Economic Department at the Ministry of Finance, and Dr. Iman Sahib Salman / Office of His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture. The workshop was also attended by specialists in the fields of agriculture, insurance and the food programme. The workshop was opened by Ms. President of the Bureau delivering the opening speech welcoming the ladies and gentlemen of the audience, where she explained the importance of this workshop, which will contribute to significantly supporting the Iraqi economy through the role of the insurance and agricultural sectors together. Mr. Ali Reza Qureshi, representative of the World Food Program, also gave a speech in which he highlighted the important and effective role of the United Nations in providing all the facilities provided by the World Food Program for the success of the insurance process against risks resulting from the climate (drought and floods), which have greatly affected the agricultural sector in Iraq, as well as Dr. Iman Sahib Salman / Office of His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture gave a speech praising this joint cooperation to advance the agricultural situation, thanking the Insurance Bureau administration for hosting this workshop.
The work of this session included providing a detailed explanation by the representatives of the World Food Program regarding insurance and target groups, identifying the governorates most affected by climate, determining the mechanism for this program and the possibility of its success, and focusing on the proposed insurance product. The attendees discussed all the points and questions raised by representatives of the Ministry of Finance and Agriculture with the Insurance Bureau and representatives of the United Nations to reach the goals that were set for the success of this project.
The attendees also stressed the continued provision of all capabilities for the purpose of completing the project, which will be a step in the right direction if it is successful because it targets the poorest groups of farmers.
