The headquarters of the Iraqi Insurance Board witnessed the first elections for the Association of Insurers and Reinsurers on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in a move described as the beginning of a new phase toward regulating the sector and enhancing confidence in it.

Ms. Israa Saleh Dawood, President of the Insurance Board, explained following the conclusion of the electoral process that the association represents a professional solidarity entity comprising all insurance and reinsurance companies licensed by the Board. She noted that its establishment was based on Article 84 of Insurance Business Regulation Law No. 10 of 2005, which stipulated the formation of the association and defined its objectives and tasks.

The President of the Board added that 2024 witnessed the issuance of the Association’s Bylaws No. (1), paving the way for the first elections to be held under the direct supervision of the Insurance Board and with the active participation of public and private insurance companies.

The elections were held in the Abdul Baqi Reda Hall at the Board’s headquarters amid a democratic atmosphere, during which insurance company candidates competed for the positions of Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Board members. The results resulted in Mr. Walid Jassim winning the presidency of the association.

The Chairman of the Insurance Bureau emphasized that the success of the elections represents the culmination of years of efforts and constitutes an important step toward activating collective action among insurance companies and protecting their interests within a unified regulatory framework that promotes the concepts of cooperation and integration in the Iraqi market. She also expressed her hope that the winners of the association’s board of directors will contribute to a “qualitative shift” that regulates and develops the work of companies by renewing competencies and injecting new blood with ideas and expertise capable of advancing the sector and consolidating professional values ​​that enhance public confidence in the insurance market in Iraq.
