Ms. Israa Saleh Dawood, Head of the Insurance Bureau, met with the World Food Programme (WFP) team overseeing the implementation of the Climate Change Risk Insurance Project, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture. This project is the first of its kind in Iraq and the region.
The project aims to provide protection to farmers and small business owners from the impacts of climate change, particularly drought risks. Its first phase covered the governorates of Karbala and Nineveh.
During the meeting, the WFP team reviewed the project’s implementation phases within the planned timeframe. The project has been successful so far, emphasizing that it represents a qualitative step toward strengthening microinsurance systems targeting poor and vulnerable groups working in the agricultural sector.
The Head of the Bureau emphasized the importance of this project in supporting financial inclusion by delivering financial and insurance services to the largest possible number of farmers and agricultural workers in areas affected by climate change, praising the efforts of the partners in its implementation.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the WFP team presented a detailed report on the compensation paid to affected farmers through Asia Gate Insurance Company, the project’s insurer and officially registered with the Insurance Bureau.
